For some years we saw the trend that Automotive OEMs aim to become Mobility Service Providers. So we saw great initiatives i.e. from Daimler and BMW. But currently we see a reverse trend: Meaning some OEMs (such as BMW) now focus again on their core business which is building cars. Mobility services have not yet been profitable for them.

Will the car sharing models overtake the current business model where individuals purchase their own vehicle?

My opinion is that car sharing remains a niche but ride sharing will increase more and more. At some point we will also see cities which will ban private cars or make parking/city access extremely expensive.

Thanks Stephan. In your opinion, how many years will it take until a large population will prefer ride sharing model?

In same cities it already is. In Singapore for example, cars are very expensive and taxis have been quite cheap. Now, with Uber and Grab, prices are pretty low and most people use public Transport / ride sharing / taxis and do not own a car.

Thank you Stephan for mentioning Singapore. How attractive would you consider the market of vertical transport solutions in urban regions like Singapore within the next 3 years or so?

Yes, very attractive! Singapore and actually Asia in general is at the forefront of that.

That sounds exciting! What are the typical questions you have been asked sometimes by your customers in terms of vertical transportation? And what kind of service e.g., Studies, Consulting, Expert-Talks does Roland Berger provide their customers then?

Yes, it is really a super interesting topic and great that we meet here. We built up a lot of expertise on that topic. I was actually the initiator and one of the authors of our study. You can check it out here: Https://www.rolandberger.com/en/Publications/Passenger-drones-ready-for-take-off.html
And here we have a video :) Https://youtu.be/RPhk0ulRNUs
