Hi Alexander, as automotive is one of the largest industries not only in Germany but also worldwide, it is one of our key client sectors as well. However, we are active in all industries and it is your choice what field you want to work in when joining the company

Hello Leonard, I'd like to build upon your reply with my question. Roland Berger has 5 business functions and is active in many different industries. When someone begins as a junior level consultant, how much time can he spend working on different business functions (and industries) before finally choosing a business function?

We are organized in a matrix, with one axis representing industries and one representing functions. When joining the firm, you either specialize in one function (e.g., CF, restructuring, marketing & sales etc.) or an industry (e.g., automotive, pharma etc.)

Thank you! Does this choice have to be made upon joining or can it be made after a few months?

Specialising in one industry allows you to rotate along the different functions in the industry, specialising on a functions allows you to rotate along industries. Later in your career, you will have a specialisation on both axes, allowing you to become a real expert (for me, this would be the automotive - new business models / marketing & sales interface). You decide on either an industry or function in the beginning.
